Personality: "I didn't need to be saved, ok?! I could handle it by myself!"
Ever since Bakugo was a young, young child he had a friend named Izuku Midoriya. This friend was weaker than him in every single way, and he grew up bullying Izuku-- who he called "Deku", a cruel nickname equaling to calling someone useless. Deku grew up without a Quirk, super powers that more than 80% of the population were born with and used to become either Heroes or Villains, and Bakugo used that to demean him to every fiber of his being. The two both admired the same Hero, All Might and wanted to be heroes because of him and because of that, Bakugo pointed Deku out specifically out of all of the other kids who were aspiring to be heroes.
Because Bakugo was born with a very powerful Quirk, he was praised by everyone around him and grew up spoiled and full of himself. He wanted to become a Hero even greater than the one he admired all of his life, and he stopped at nothing to achieve his goals. That's where Deku comes in, because Deku shared the same goals as him he did everything he could to beat it into Deku that he was nothing but a pebble on the side of the road who could never amount to anything.. so he wouldn't have competition. But despite it, Deku kept following Bakugo because of how amazing he thought Bakugo was. That scared Bakugo, the fact that Deku kept going strong no matter what Bakugo did to deter him and the fact that Deku always looked after him even when he was cruel towards him. He feared his soft, caring heart because it's the one weakness that Bakugo has and he didn't understand it. He perceived Deku's kindness and worry over Bakugo getting hurt as him looking down on him -- Deku thinking that Bakugo was lesser than him. He was the only person who didn't treat Bakugo as if he was just an amazing person who could do anything he set his mind to. He saw him as another person who has his hardships as well, and that drove Bakugo nuts. Because to himself, he was amazing. He was someone who would win every single fight and who'd never fail at anything no matter what. He had built his own expectations for himself from years and years of people constantly fawning over him and praising him, and he was terrified of not being able to meet them. So to have someone recognize when he was in trouble was like having someone mocking him for being weak.. or so it felt to Bakugo himself.
That's why, this moment made a huge impact to him.
One day after school, Bakugo had been attacked by a villain. It was a villain who was made of sludge, and had the ability to take over someone's body and use their Quirk whilst in their body. This was very dangerous as Bakugo's Quirk can be extremely deadly in the wrong hands, but his will is strong. When he was attacked by the villain he managed to hold off for as long as he could, but as he struggled he set off explosion after explosion until the entire street was completely enveloped in flames. There were pro heroes around who could have helped, but because of the flames half of them were out of commission. They couldn't do anything but stand around and wait for someone with a more suited Quirk to help but as they waited, Bakugo started getting more and more desperate. He couldn't breathe, and he started to feel himself succumb to the villain, his body weakening from lack of oxygen and his will starting to die out. He looked out towards the crowd with fearful eyes and out from it ran Deku.
His rival.
The boy who he thought had been looking down at him his entire life.
Seeing Deku run out to save him, despite not even having a Quirk that could help absolutely enraged Bakugo. He felt embarrassed, and ashamed that he needed to have a weak, quirkless loser rush to his rescue. Even while he was trying to save Bakugo, Deku was in tears and his entire body was trembling and when asked what he was doing he told Bakugo that he looked like he was asking for help... which made matters worse. Because he was. He was asking for help, in the end. He couldn't fight back as well anymore but the Heroes were just standing around.. he was pleading for someone to help him, before he suffocated entirely and died. And Deku saw it. Deku saw it and it crushed Bakugo's pride. He was supposed to be strong.. stronger than Deku but he ended up needing his help.
But... at the same time, it woke him up a little bit. It was the first time he hadn't been able to take care of a situation by himself, and he learned from it that sometimes you need help from other people. And even though he nastily declared to Deku that he only tried to save him to get Bakugo to owe him, he left him alone for the rest of the year. No more bullying. No more teasing. He just left him to chase his dream in silence.
"From here on out... I'm going to be Number One! Don't you dare think you'll beat me ever again!"
A year passed, and miraculously... Deku had a Quirk. Bakugo and him both applied and made it into U.A, an esteemed school which purpose was to raise the next generation of Heroes. Though Bakugo had threatened Deku not to apply, because of his own delusions of grandeur having him wnt to be the only student to make it into U.A from their small middle school, Deku still managed to make it in and that simply set off Bakugo. Not too long after the semester started the two were put in teams against each other for combat training, and Bakugo used this opportunity to put Deku into his place. To prove to him that he was nothing compared to Bakugo, and that he couldn't even stand in the same ring as him.
He was enraged and hurt, that his "childhood friend" had a Quirk this entire time. He thought that Deku had tricked him... had lied to him since they were four years old about not having a Quirk, because in Bakugo's mind the two were both desperately grabbing for the same prize. He thought that Deku lied to him to get the upper hand, because he'd been looking down at him all this time right? And though their relationship wasn't good they still were friends, of some kind. And to think that his friend had betrayed him like that cut massively deep. So he fought Deku with these feelings in his heart, ignoring his teammate entirely for his grudge and in the end he ended up being outsmarted by Deku. He was better than him by combat ability and Quirk alone, but Deku was quick to think on his feet and managed to snag the win just barely, with one of his arms broken and the other burnt by Bakugo's Quirk.
This was the very first time Bakugo had lost to anyone. The first time he'd lost, and to him, he couldn't lose. He couldn't. There were so many people who looked up to him-- who thought he was the most amazing person in the world including himself, so he didn't allow himself to lose. The thing he idolized All Might for so badly to begin with was the fact that All Might always won every fight he was in, so for Bakugo to fail... for him to lose and even to Deku of all people was a blow so large to his pride and his ego that he couldn't handle it at first. He started to have a mild panic attack over it, unable to breathe properly or think until he was snapped out of it by All Might himself (who had been their teacher for this class) and he spent a lot of the rest of that class period thinking about it. He thought hard, about why he lost. About who he lost to. And in the end he came to the conclusion that he needed to work harder, to become stronger. Rather than giving up there over his first loss, it simply motivated him even more to become the best of the best and he learned a really hard lesson about underestimating others and acting as if you're above them.
After the fight, Deku admitted to Bakugo that he was borrowing his Quirk from someone else and that was why he had it all of a sudden after being Quirkless for fifteen years, and at the time Bakugo didn't quite understand what he meant. But he chewed on it, from then on. He thought about it a lot.
"Even if society accepts it-- if I don't, then this win is worth squat!"
A few weeks after his first lost, Bakugo had become a little bit calmer. Not a whole lot, he still ran around yelling at others and insulting them for no real reason but it wasn't because he simply thought himself better than them. It was more because of habit, his short fuse, and to keep face. That fight with Deku really did teach him a lesson he'd never forget, and he took it with him into the next big battlefield that he had to face.
The U.A sports festival.
It was a festival to show off the students of U.A and their wonderful Quirks. Having been the focus of a villain attack already, Bakugo's class was on the fore front of everyone's mind and all eyes were on him as he was chosen to be the representative of the class. He stepped up to take a pledge for them... and instead made a very selfish pledge to win first place. It was a challenge to the other students -- "Come at me with all you got", is what he was saying and he treated the sports festival with the seriousness he would treat any other fight. He was viscous and quick thinking with his Quirk, using it to fly over obstacles during a race, or to shoot himself towards others during a chivalry battle to try and capture headbands with points assigned to them to win. He was so determined to win the sports festival after making such a strong pledge in the beginning, but only managed to snag third place for the race and second for the chivalry battle, and the urgency to win the final stage caught up to him. He was desperate to prove to himself and to others that he was a force to be reckoned with, which was why he made that pledge in the first place so during the last stage, a tournament of one-v-one battles with their Quirks he gave it his absolute all.
He fought his opponents ruthlessly, like he'd fight a villain one-on-one but he wasn't the same Bakugo as before. The fault he had been suffering from was thinking that he was invincible, that he truly was the best. But since coming to U.A he's learned that he simply can't think like that anymore. It's impossible to underestimate students with Quirks and abilities just as strong or even stronger than his own, so he fought every opponent equally. It came to a point where he was up against his fellow classmate, bubbily and cheerful Uraraka. Her Quirk and combat skills weren't as impressive as his own, but the longer their fight went on the more Bakugo realized just how strong she was. He faced booing from the crowd, from him relentlessly attacking her over and over, "not going easy on a frail girl", but he didn't go easy on her because he realized how strong she was. She could have easily defeated him if he let his guard down even a little, and even with her being a girl, which was an issue many classmates chastised him for, he didn't take that chance. He respected her for her abilities, and started to call her by her name by the end of the battle when he was known for using nicknames for his classmates because he didn't care enough to learn their actual names.
Despite the harsh reactions from the crowd, Bakugo kept going strong. He won every battle after Uraraka's until he met up with Todoroki, the student who even he was sure he couldn't win against in their class, in the finals. Todoroki's Quirk was the ability to use ice on his right side, and fire on his left. Because of his horrid upbringing from his father whom he got his flames from Todoroki had refused to use his left side for battles until Deku convinced him it was his own power. Bakugo watched from the sidelines in annoyance as Deku riled up his opponent and overwhelmingly lost because of it, and it set in his mind that he wanted to beat Todoroki's flames. If Deku couldn't beat them, then he needed to to prove that he was better than Deku if he couldn't meet him at the finals. So when he and Todoroki faced off, he provoked him and tried to get him to use his flames.
However, Todoroki was.. confused. He didn't know for sure if he should use his flames or not and faced Bakugo with his ice only much to Bakugo's dismay. He told Todoroki that he was here seriously, and he didn't want a half-assed fight. He wanted to win against Todorki totally and completely, not against a Todoroki who was only using half of his power. Otherwise, he couldn't really say he was the strongest. He couldn't really say he could beat Deku, because even Deku looked like he had a chance to beat Todoroki at 50%. When the two delivered their final blows it looked like Todoroki was going to use his flames.. but he decided against it last minute and lost consciousness to Bakugo's explosion. And that. Absolutely. Infuriated him. It infuriated him and it wounded his pride some more, becoming the ultimate winner against someone he looked to be a rival who only fought him at 50%. He didn't accept it as a true win, going as far as to yell at and shake the unconscious Todoroki, asking him why he didn't use all of his power. He would have rather lost to a powerful opponent than won against a half-assed one, and he was so angry and frustrated at the results that he had to be muzzled and chained up at the awards ceremony otherwise he might have actually lashed out against Todoroki.
"I break.. and I break myself... even if it means twisting myself, I'll choose the way I win."
Some time passed between the sports festival and now, everyone having went off on their own for Hero Internships. During that time, Deku managed to learn how to use his new Quirk better by copying some of the movements that Bakugo himself used when he fought and when Bakugo found out, it egged him on even further. He was like a ticking time bomb, waiting for his moment to explode and the more Deku got stronger the more Bakugo was close to the end of the rope.
It finally boiled over when the two of them were paired together for a team exercise. They were paired because of how poorly they got along together, and they were chosen to fight All Might-- their hero, and the strongest teacher in all of U.A. They had to act as though All Might was a villain that the two of them had to capture, but Bakugo wanted nothing to do with Deku. Not even a little bit. His pride had been so badly damaged by Deku getting stronger and stronger that he was determined to beat All Might without his help, and if he couldn't beat All Might then he'd rather lose not trying to work with Deku at all. He still viewed Deku as someone who had looked down at him all his life, and held resentment towards the fact that it seemed like he was improving faster than Bakugo was despite Bakugo having started off far better than Deku ever had. So for him to need Deku's help to win a battle was the biggest blow to his ego, and his inferiority complex, built from having so many expectations for himself that he didn't know what to do with, completely burst. He gave up entirely, and waited for All Might to render him unconscious so he could lose on his own terms... but then Deku stepped in and punched him back to his senses.
He reminded Bakugo that ever since they were kids he refused to lose any fights, and that he should be the last person giving up before even trying to win. It pissed Bakugo off but at the same time, it woke him up as well. He realized through Deku's words that in order to achieve his goals of becoming the Number One Hero, he needed to make sacrifices sometimes. He couldn't just give in because he didn't like who he was working with-- in a real situation, his actions would have caused many civilians to die. So begrudgingly, he made the decision to put his own feelings aside and work with Deku, though he wanted to win his way and Deku thankfully went with his plan. The two of them barely made it out of that exercise without permanent damage from All Might's brutal attacks, and in the end Bakugo had to be carried out unconscious by Deku but they passed and from then on Bakugo realized that sometimes.... cooperativeness was important.
"The reason I came along was because.. I didn't want to get in All Might's way."
Training camp.
Over the summer vacation, the students were gathered together for one week to work on their Quirks and strengthen them. It was supposed to be a fun filled week full of many combat exercises and fun events to do with each other, but it was cut short. Villains had found their location and attacked with one thing in their mind: kidnapping Bakugo to force him to join their cause. They targeted him because of how violently angry he had shown himself to be during the sports festival, and they thought that he would be easy to convince to join them if they promised that he'd be able to win. But even though they were able to steal him away, they weren't able to convince him.
He was egotistical, selfish, had a fuse as short as a candle wick and an inferiority complex that could combat no other but above all else he had a dream. He had a dream to become like the hero he admired his entire life and to surpass him. He was going to be a hero, or die trying and he wasn't afraid to tell the villains that to their face even though he knew it would have been smarter to play along until he could find a better chance to escape. Because he's so ambitious and has such a strong resolve, he'd rather die declaring that he was going to be a hero than live pretending to be a villain. He'd never stoop down to their level, even if they promised that he'd be able to win on their side.
With his determination set in stone, the villains were preparing to knock him unconscious just as Heroes burst through their little hideout and it looked as though Bakugo was saved. But they had a trick up their sleeve... and them along with Bakugo ended up being transported to another part of town. All Might followed closely behind however, and it was those two versus a group of about seven villains.. one of which being a man so strong that All Might could barely fight against him equally. Bakugo felt useless being there, knowing that All Might was very conscious of the fact that if he fought at 100% Bakugo might get hurt in the fray. But with the group of villains fighting him all he could do was try his best to keep them off of his back. It was frustrating, being a liability like this. In the past Bakugo might have thought that All Might was lucky to fight side by side with him but through the different experiences knocking his pride down one peg at a time, he was able to recognize that he was just in the way. That's why, in a crucial moment, a group of his classmates had snuck out and offered a hand out to Bakugo to rescue him from that situation. In the past he would have refused it completely, but now... feeling like he was just a burden... Bakugo fled towards them without any hesitation. He took their hand, and was saved. And All Might could fight to his heart's content from then on.
But...
But......
Even though All Might ended up winning, it cost him more than anyone was prepared for. As Bakugo watched the fight continue on from a television screen, safely away from the scene, a crushing guilt started to grip at his heart. Because All Might put everything into the fight against the evil of all evils and his win cost him his Quirk. He had used up all of the power that his body had stored inside and by the time the fight was over All Might was no longer.
He retired.
And to Bakugo... it was his fault.
"Why did I become the reason for All Might's end?!"
The next few weeks for Bakugo were... tough. He blamed himself for the retirement of the hero he spent his life idolizing, the hero he looked up to more than anyone else in the world. But he couldn't bring himself to talk to anyone about it, both due to his inability to express his real feelings with other people from never having to before and because... he had a sneaking suspicion that the person who gave Deku his Quirk was All Might himself, and he was worried that if he started to talk about how he was feeling he might let that thought spill out. So he kept quiet about it, letting it eat at him and eat at him and it ended up hindering his ability to focus on tasks very well.
Because of that, he failed an upcoming exam, one that was extremely important towards all of the student's goals to becoming Heroes. It was an exam to get a provisional license, a license that would allow them to use their Quirk outside of school without getting in trouble thus letting them fight against villains when they really needed to. Previously they've had to do it a couple of times before, but because of the laws against using Quirks without one of those licenses they've gotten in... tremendous trouble for it. And without a license, Bakugo was behind almost his entire class. Deku had passed while he had let himself fail due to the thoughts plaguing his mind, and that drove Bakugo to finally talk to someone about it.
That night after the provisional exam was over, Bakugo told Deku to meet him outside. He led Deku to the area where they first had that team battle, where he had his first loss and much to Deku's worrying he didn't turn back. As soon as the two were there, he immediately threw accusations towards Deku. He told him that he was sure All Might was the one who gave him his Quirk, because the moment Deku got a Quirk, All Might started getting weaker. He deducted it from that, and a few other moments he managed to catch along the way as well and Deku.. couldn't deny it.
So his suspicions were correct. All Might, the hero he had idolized since he was a young child, recognized Deku over him. That realization hit him like a rock, and he decided then and there to prove it once and for all. Prove who was better. He challenged Deku to a fight, and didn't listen to Deku's pleas against doing so. Even though it was a horrid idea, and the two would absolutely get in trouble for it Bakugo needed this fight. The worries about himself being the sole reason All Might lost his power and had to retire, the crushing feeling of a friend who he perceived as looking down on him becoming recognized by All Might and getting stronger than Bakugo with every minute, and the desperate want to become better than Deku-- better than All Might himself all came tumbling down onto Bakugo's heart. The pressure was too much for him to handle anymore, and he wanted to fight it out with Deku. To get all of his feelings out so they could stop haunting him.
But merely exchanging fists wasn't enough and during the fight Bakugo had stumbled, causing Deku to ask if he was alright. That question, the look on Deku's face that said he was worried about Bakugo finally were what pushed him over the edge and he snapped. He screamed at Deku, telling him that he didn't understand why Deku always looked at him like that. As if he was someone weak who always needed help. He confessed that he didn't understand why his improvement was stagnant while Deku was getting stronger and stronger, and he didn't understand why All Might chose Deku to be his successor. They both idolized All Might for different reasons, but he couldn't understand why his reason was incorrect and Deku's seemed to be better. And above everything else... he finally confessed to Deku, the person he resented his entire life, that he blamed himself for All Might's retire. With hot tears streaming down Bakugo's face, he tearfully let everything out. Telling Deku that he tried to keep it a secret, and tried not to think about it but the slightest accident would cause him to remember what happened and would make the suffocating guilt spill out all over again. He couldn't stop thinking about it no matter how hard he tried, and he didn't know what to do.
He confessed that he thought Deku had been looking down at him all this time, but Deku told him it was the opposite. That he followed him around despite how much Bakugo beat him up because he admired him, and wanted to be like him. And hearing that, hearing that he was a hero much closer to Deku than even All Might... took a little bit of the strain off of Bakugo's heart. It was a misunderstanding that the two couldn't work through because of Bakugo's inability to just talk to people, and now that they had finally managed to talk it out it was almost like the sky cleared up a little more. They continued their fight until they were stopped by All Might himself, who had been listening not too far away and All Might assured Bakugo that it wasn't his fault he lost his powers. And he sat Bakugo down to tell him everything that revolved about him, his Quirk, and why he chose Deku over anyone else.
And after that night... Bakugo viewed Deku completely differently. The resentment that had been pent up his entire life had been turned into respect, and acknowledgement. Rather than Deku being a small-fry who thought himself better and was challenging Bakugo just to antagonize him, be realized that Deku was a rival. Someone he wanted to beat, not from a place of hatred but from a place of understanding. And from them on the two started to get along much better than before, and Bakugo was no longer afraid to talk to Deku one-on-one when he needed to.
"If all you ever do is look down on people, you won't be able to recognize your own weaknesses."
Since that fight with Deku, Bakugo had a lot to think about and a lot to reflect on. The main reason he had failed the provisional license exam was because of his crass and violent behaviour that wasn't fit for a hero, so to combat that he along with a few others were given a test. A test... involving them looking after a class of elementary kids. At first Bakugo was only looking at it as if it was unimportant, and not worth his time. He yelled at the kids and treated them like shit, because he didn't think babysitting a bunch of snot-nosed brats was something he needed to do to become a hero. But as it became harder and harder to actually calm the children down, he started to realize how important it really was. From his previous experiences, he realized that he needed to take even stupid situations like this seriously if he ever wanted to become a hero so he brought the other trainees together to form a plan. A plan to make them look cool to the children, by using their quirks to make a huge slide for them to play on rather than trying to beat them with their Quirks, since Bakugo knew first hand how shitty you feel if you end up losing to someone who you think looks down on you.
They managed to win the children over, and through that experience Bakugo showed that he was able to acknowledge his faults and move past them. In the past he would have never even tried because he viewed himself above situations like this, but he realized between then and now that you can't live your life looking down on everyone and everything. That sometimes you needed to realize your mistakes, or you'd never grow from them.
"If you losers are in a pinch, I'll save you. Got it? And if I'm in trouble, you losers gotta save me too!"
Fall had come, and with it came the school's culture festival. Bakugo's classmates decided on doing a live band along with a dance show, to try and let other students let loose and have a good time. They all felt bad for always being the center of villain attacks and making it hard on the other students, but being the center of one of the villain's attacks... Bakugo viewed it differently. He was asked to be the drummer for the band, since he was the only one with experience and was delightfully good at playing but he refused at first. Because he overheard upper classmen talking shit about his class, about how they thought it was tacky for them to throw a show on for the other classes sake when it was Bakugo's class' fault that they were stressed to begin with. So at first, Bakugo refused. He was enraged that his class was being blamed for the villain attacks, as if it was their fault they were always targeted. He felt a lot of pressure, and a heavy weight on his shoulders as the one who had been kidnapped during their last attack and he exclaimed that it was unfair for them to have to suck up to everyone else over something they couldn't even help. But despite him being against trying to play nice with the other students, he still agreed to help his classmates out. Because he felt sorry for letting himself get kidnapped and worry all of them, and because he really did care about his classmates despite his harsh words.
So with a declaration of "We'll murder them with music!" the band was formed. Through practicing with the band and learning to play alongside other people and their strides, Bakugo learned what it was really like to be in a team. He learned to work with each other's weaknesses and strengths, and to listen to other people's opinions rather than going off on his own like he used to always do. And that experience proved to be extremely helpful to him down the line -- for combat training that involved working alongside three other people in a team.
In the past, Bakugo's teamwork was nonexistent. It was widely known that he'd rather do things on his own, no matter how reckless the situation could be so it was a shock to their opponents when they saw him actually working with his teammates. He went off on his own like usual, but when he was in a pinch or when he noticed his teammates in a pinch he'd rush to rescue them-- and allowed them to do the same with him. Ever since that fight with Deku, and the experiences and crushing defeats that built up to this moment Bakugo learned a lot. He learned that he couldn't slide by by thinking he was the greatest and underestimating everyone around him. He learned that he couldn't be a hero if he refused to work alongside other heroes at the scene. He learned that he had to face his weaknesses head on, and adapt and find ways to work around them and above all else.. he learned to let go of his inferiority complex. He knew that in order to achieve his goal, his dream, he couldn't allow himself to let a loss cloud all of his thoughts. He couldn't allow himself to feel as though someone else saving him meant he was weak. And he learned that he needed to cooperate with others and save people in order to win, no matter the risk and no matter the situation.
Because after all, that's what being a hero truly meant.
